Chain of custody

How it works

  1. Collected

    Describe what you have found

Say where the material is, what it looks like, roughly when the building went up and whether anything has been damaged.

  2. Handed over

We look for a local match

With your consent, we pass your enquiry to one local asbestos specialist if one covers your postcode, and to nobody else.

  3. Received

    Settle the job with them

If your enquiry is passed on, the specialist gets in touch to talk through the job and the terms. Going ahead is your choice.

A clipboard, small clear sample bags, a roll of blank labels, a dust mask, a spray bottle and blue gloves laid out on bare floorboards in an empty room with a textured ceiling.
Fig. 1 If you think a material may contain asbestos, leave it alone until it has been looked at. Do not drill, sand, scrape or break it.

Notes for the specialist

Useful to have to hand

None of this is needed to send an enquiry, but it helps the specialist understand the job sooner.

  1. Roughly when the building was built

Asbestos was used widely in UK buildings until it was banned in 1999, so anything built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.

  2. Where the material is

For example a textured ceiling, a garage or shed roof, floor tiles, boxing around pipes, or panels behind a heater.

  3. What condition it is in

Whether it looks intact, or is cracked, broken, crumbling, or has been drilled or sanded. A photo from a safe distance helps.

  4. What you are planning

Buying, repairs, a refit or demolition. Surveys before building work look further into the fabric than surveys for managing materials in place.

Questions

Is Herts Asbestos an asbestos removal company?

No. Herts Asbestos is an independent enquiry service and does not survey, test or remove asbestos itself. With your consent, we pass your enquiry to a local asbestos specialist if one covers your postcode.

What if nobody covers my postcode?

We tell you that nobody does, and your details are not passed on to anyone. You are then free to find help another way.

I think I have found asbestos. What should I do first?

Leave it alone. Do not drill, sand, scrape, break or sweep it, and keep people and pets away if it is damaged. A sample analysed by a laboratory is the reliable way to know what it is.

Does my house legally need an asbestos survey?

Not to manage it day to day. The duty to manage asbestos covers non-domestic buildings and the shared parts of blocks of flats, not a private home. Building work is different: before starting, a builder has to find out whether the job could disturb asbestos, so in an older house a survey of the rooms affected is often needed first.

Can I put asbestos in my bin or take it to the tip?

Not in your household bin. Asbestos is hazardous waste. Hertfordshire County Council and the London Borough of Enfield each publish guidance on household asbestos, so read your council's before you move anything.
